Falcons starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. returned to practice, albeit indoors, ready to help his team get back to its winning ways.
He said he could not play at his best on Sunday due to the bone bruise he suffered in the 49ers game, but he feels ready for the Patriots this Sunday.
“I don’t feel like me being out there would have helped the team,” Penix said about the injury that kept him out of the Dolphins game last Sunday.
“I felt good today,” Penix Jr. said. “I feel like I am trending in the right direction.”
Penix Jr. was seen throwing passes inside a closed field during practice today. He thinks the team, though struggling now, can find its way back to victory. They just need to play “complementary football.”
“We got the players. We got the coaches. We got the game plan,” he said. We just gotta execute it, and make it happen.”
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris added that he could tell Penix Jr. was getting better each day.
Also announced at Falcons headquarters today:
- CB Billy Bowman Jr, WR Drake London, and Edge Jalon Walker practiced today. Both could possibly take the field against the Patriots this Sunday.
- Jessie Bates III, Zach Harrison, and Storm Norton are “day-to-day, with Norton in the “2nd week” of recovery, according to Morris.
- Morris says the Falcons need to improve scoring in the red zone, upfront performance, and running the ball.
- Morris says TE Kyle Pitts Sr. is “out there and executing at a very high level.”
- Morris on OC Zac Robinson: “We got to fix it, and we got to fix it fast. Last two weeks were not reflective of what we built the previous two weeks.”
- Robinson himself said, “We’re still two weeks removed from what we had against Buffalo. We haven’t forgotten how to play. We still have good players. We have good coaches. It’s just getting back to that and just maintain a level of consistency.”
- Robinson on Falcons’ level of play: “It sucks to be in the same position again, but I have no doubt the response from the guys will be right. Once Sunday comes around, those guys will be ready to roll.”
- Robinson says WR Darnell Mooney is “getting his legs back” and he should be “taking off from here.”
- Falcons and consistency: “Consistency is the biggest thing. It’s the truest measurement of performance.”
- Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich says Patriots QB Drake Maye is “way better than I want him to be. He feels like a mini Josh Allen…He’s gonna be a problem.”
- Ulbrich says the Falcons will again deploy the defense in the place of LB Divine Deablo, who remains injured.
- LT Jake Matthews knows what will cure the Falcons of their inconsistency blues: “You win,” he said. “Winning cures everything.”
- Falcons will practice outside tomorrow, as no rain is expected. The team practiced indoors today because of the wet weather.
