Atlanta United Confirms Giakoumakis Transfer to Cruz Azul

Atlanta United confirmed the long-speculated departure of the team’s forward Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The club announced this afternoon that he was transferred to Cruz Azul of Liga MX for an undisclosed transfer fee. Previous press reports had Atlanta United receiving $10 million for the transaction, but the club has not confirmed that price at posting.

“We’re grateful for Giorgos’ contributions during his time at the club and we wish him the best moving forward,” said Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra in a statement. “This transfer illustrates the nature of operating in a global marketplace. With a lot of season left to play, we plan to strengthen the group during the upcoming Summer Transfer Window.”

Giakoumakis spent a year with the team and in 32 starts, he recorded 24 goals and 7 assists.

Giakoumakis’s departure opens up a Designated Player spot on the team’s 2024 roster, according to the Five Stripes. One of the opportunities the team has to fill the Giakoumakis void will be the MLS’ Secondary Transfer Window, which opens July 18th and closes August 14.
