Atlanta United Shut Out Seattle Sounders 2-0

Atlanta United got back on the winning track in a big way, by shutting out the Seattle Sounders.

On the Sunday night game at Seattle, Atlanta bested the Sounders with two goals coming from one person, Giorgos Giakoumakis. He hit two scores in the 11th and 65th minutes of the game. Nobody on the Seattle side could place a goal, leading to the 2-0 victory in Lumen Field.

“A lot of things that we’ve worked on in the last two weeks happened in the game and that’s great to see,” said the Stripes’ defender Brooks Lennon after the game. ” The way we pressed them from the beginning, the way we controlled the tempo of the game on the ball. The way in the first half we were moving them side to side, opening up gaps, runs in behind, chances in front of goal.”

Atlanta owned the ball 63% of the time, with 561 passes over Seattle’s 316. Seattle did have more shots, 16 to 9, however.

Atlanta United remains above the playoff line, ranking #7 in the MLS Eastern Conference, just below #6 ranked Nashville, which the Five Stripes will play at home Saturday in Mercedes Benz Stadium. Google has Atlanta favored to win by 46%.
