Braves Land Right Hand Thrower, Soroka Heads to Gwinnett

The Atlanta Braves announced it has acquired right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, and has sent right-handed pitcher Michael Soroka to the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett club.

The Braves also designated right-handed pitcher Seth Elledge for assignment.

Chirinos will be used as the Braves starter. The Rays had him working as early as last week as a starter and in the clean-up spot. In the 2023 regular season with the Rays, Chirinos had an ERA of 4.01, with a 4-4 won-loss record. He started 33 games and has no record of saving games.

As for Soroka, the starter “has shown signs of encouragement, but he hasn’t been as effective as the Braves would like since he returned from a nearly three-year absence,” according to the team’s official website. His absence was due to a right Achilles injury in 2020 and 2021. He currently has a 5.52 ERA and has won 2 games and lost 1 game this year.Β

Elledge has a 4.64 ERA and was in 23 games in his regular season.
