Coach Morris addresses team issues after Sunday’s loss to Miami

Falcons Coach Raheem Morris (Atlanta Falcons)
A day after another humiliating loss to an underachieving team, Falcons coach Raheem Morris said no changes are forthcoming in the coaching ranks.
Criticism fell heavily on offensive coordinator Zac Robinson over two consecutive losses, last week to the San Francisco 49ers and this past Sunday, to the then 6-1 Miami Dolphins. Robinson’s play-calling is seen as contributing to the losses and a hindrance to the team’s offensive progress, but coach Morris said today he saw no need to dismiss Robinson.
“I’ve got so much confidence in Zac,” said Morris in a press conference earlier this afternoon. “I know we can move the football.”
Morris also addressed the disappointing results from the team’s offensive line.
“Yeah, we didn’t play well,” he said. “We’ve got to go back and give those guys another week of practice. Go out and get better, that’s all you can do.”
Fans and critics are up in arms over the Falcons’ back-to-back losses, and some are demanding Robinson be fired. There are also growing calls for Morris to be dismissed, but Morris said the onus is on the team to turn the negative vibes around.
“It’s not their job to like us. It’s our job to make them like us,” said Morris.
Other revelations from today’s presser….
- Safety Jessie Bates III, who was injured in Sunday’s game, appears not to have a serious issue, according to Morris, but the team is “in a wait-and-see mode” regarding his condition.
- Jalon Walker and Billy Bowman Jr. could return this week. Storm Norton is “really close”, and no new information was provided for Drake London, Zach Harrison, and Michael Penix Jr.
- Morris says the Falcons’ run game must come back to life. He said it’s the lifeline of everything the team wants to accomplish, and the lack of a successful run game leads to losses like Sunday’s.
- JD Bertrand’s performance Sunday “wasn’t good enough from an overall standpoint.” He also said he was surprised by backup QB Kirk Cousins’ performance because he was better in practice and knows the team’s offense well. “He’ll tell you, too. He’ll tell you he’s disappointed in how he played,” said Morris.
- Are the Falcons underestimating their opponents? Morris doesn’t think so. “We just didn’t play well.” He adds the Falcons got “out-Atlanta(ed)” by the visiting Dolphins.
- Morris had a conversation with team owner Arthur Blank about the similarities between the blowout losses with Carolina and Miami. He told Blank that the poor play up front was the common thread in both results.
