The Falcons will be doing without the services of tackle Kaleb McGary for a ‘‘significant amount of time” going into the regular season.
This means the Falcons will be spending the time between now and the start of the regular season looking for a solution to a suddenly glaring and vexing problem: who will guard QB Michael Penix Jr. on his right side. Not having a capable protector could leave QB 1 Penix vulnerable in passing situations.
Coach Raheem Morris told the press Friday night after the third preseason game (which they dropped 13-24 against the Dallas Cowboys), “The thing I will say to you now is that he will miss significant time,” he said, as reported by Falcons senior reporter Tori McElhaney. “Looks like it will be IR, whatever the case may be, we will have to see there, but he will miss significant time for us.”
Morris offered no exact timeline for when McGary will be back on the field.
Elijah Wilkinson is said to be most likely to take McGary’s place, but with fellow tackle Storm Norton also out on ankle surgery, the Falcons may have to start probing the sparse offensive talent roster for help. That adds to the Falcons full plate trying to cull players to build a 53-man-roster.
And they don’t have much time. The season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is Sept 7 and Mercedes Benz Stadium.
