Wounded Birds: Hawks Navigate Through Key Player Injuries

The Atlanta Hawks are reeling.

While the team is trying to stay above the play-in line in the NBA Eastern Conference, injuries have taken some of their key players off the court and on the injury list at a time when they are most needed. The latest being team forward Jalen Johnson, who had to leave last night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the third quarter due to a right ankle injury.

Here’s who is currently on the Hawks injury list, with updates on their respective conditions.

Jalen Johnson

As mentioned, Johnson last night suffered an injury to his right ankle. X-rays taken at State Farm Arena luckily were negative, and revealed he had a right ankle sprain. The Hawks say Johnson will not be traveling with the team to Friday night’s Memphis Grizzlies game. His status is “day-to-day”, according to the Hawks.

Kobe Bufkin

Bufkin has a left big toe injury. The forward underwent an MRI on Monday in New York. When the team got back to Atlanta, Bufkin had a follow-up examination with team physicians at State Farm Arena. The diagnosis: left big toe sprain. Bufkin will be walking around in a boot for ten days. His status will be updated as needed.

Onyeka Okongwu

Like Bufkin, Okongwu has a left big toe sprain, but he also has sesamoiditis. Okongwu is now out of a walking boot and will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days. His status will be updated when needed.

Trae Young

The guard remains out as he is recovering from surgery on his fifth finger. He should return in about two weeks.

De’Andre Hunter returned to action last night after recovering from a right knee injury.
