Replacement kicker Romo joins official roster

The Falcons have officially parted with kicker Younghoe Koo after six years.
Koo’s career with the Falcons was marked by several seasons of dependable field goal and point-after kicks. But his effectiveness waned in the last few seasons, capped in Week 1 vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a potential game-tying 43-yard FG that went wide right, costing the team the game and putting his future with the team in question.
Koo joined the Falcons in 2019 from the New England Patriots after their longtime kicker Matt Bryant was cut. In the 89 games he has played with the Falcons, he has made 178 successful kicks out of 205 attempted. He scored a grand total of 700 points in his years with the Falcons. He hit a career-best 58-yard field goal against the New Orleans Saints that won the game in Week 4, 2024.
His best year was 2020, when he went 39 of 37 FGs, a 94.9% success rate. In his last complete season, 2024, his success rate slipped to 73.5%.
Koo responded this afternoon to the development on his Instagram account…
“I want to thank the Falcons organization for giving me an opportunity when no one else would six years ago. This place helped me grow as a kicker and as a man. I will forever be grateful for the support from the fans during my time here. I have nothing but love and respect for everyone in the building, I wish yall the best. I’m full of gratitude and excitement as I continue my journey in this league.”

Koo’s five-year $24,250,000 contract was due to expire in 2027. The Dirty Birds will eat $1.25 million in dead money, but save $4.25 million towards the salary cap, according to OverTheCap.com.
Koo’s departure from Flowery Branch means Parker Romo will be the team’s new starting kicker going forward. Romo went 5/5 on his kicks last Sunday against the Vikings, apparently clinching his place on the 53-man roster.
