The UGA Women’s Soccer team won its first SEC East Championship today.
The Georgia Bulldogs accomplished this by beating the number 23 Kentucky Wildcats 1-0. The only goal scored in the game came from Georgia’s Summer Denigan, who punched in her goal in the 20th minute of the game. Goalie Jordan Brown blocked two shots to get her fourth shutout of the season.
“When we came in, this is kind of what we started thinking about,” said UGA Soccer coach Keidane McAlphine after the game. “It’s a testament to the work that the women have put in, and it’s not easy to do this in this league in the East. So, to have that kind of response and whatnot is special.”
The team did well this season, with an 8-3-4 overall record and a .667 percent average. The team outscored their rivals 24-13 in the regular season. They are also the least penalized team against their opponents, with 6 yellow cards and no red cards against their opponents combined 14 yellow cards and one red card.
The Bulldogs are on a roll, and as satisfying as this win is, they know they can’t rest now. They will go to Columbia, South Carolina on October 22 to face the South Carolina Gamecocks and then Auburn on Oct. 26 to continue their championship quest.
“Keep the energy high and win out the rest of our games to put us in the best position for the SEC tournament and NCAA,’s said Denigan after the game.
