Giakoumakis Powers Atlanta United’s Win over New England

Atlanta United started the 2024 season with a bang, and it was Giorgos Giakoumakis lighting the fuse.

The team blew away the visiting New England Revolution 4-1 today in their home opener at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Three of the four points scored by Atlanta United were scored by one player: Giakoumakis.

The first goal of the night came from Thiago Almada in the 45th minute converting a penalty kick just before halftime. The Five Stripes would convert another penalty kick this time by Giakoumakis in the 55th minute.

The very productive Giakoumakis gave his team three of its four points today, with a header shot in the 60th minute and a difficult left-footed hat trick shot in the 74th minute that would solidify Atlanta United’s lead. New England would get on the board in the 83rd minute but could add no more points.

Although New England had possession of the ball longer than Atlanta did, 55.9% to 44.1%, Atlanta United made the most of their opportunities.

The next game for Atlanta United will be against Orlando at Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sunday, March 17th.
